Publishing an article in the Annals is intended to be straightforward. This page gives an overview of the general requirements and procedure. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Author Guidelines
The Annals accepts submissions from authors of their articles in the areas of genealogy, family history, and biography. Short or medium-length articles are most appropriate; a series of smaller articles is often the best way to share and improve one's research. Smaller articles also help search engines like Google return better results.

The most important requirement is that source citations be given for the data presented. No particular style for these is required; they may be as footnotes, endnotes, or references in the body of the text. The presence and usability of the source references is the important thing; sources are the foundation of genealogical research.

A few things which should be avoided:

  • Data on living persons
  • Large works, such as ones including large numbers of photographs
  • Articles not in English
  • Lack of usable source references for significant content
The articles are formatted for 8½ x 11 (or A4) paper in Portable Document Format files. Our Preparation Guide page has the details and help on getting your text into the appropriate form.

At your option, your article may be accompanied by a corresponding GEDCOM data file. This is also covered by the Preparation Guide page.

Copyright Notice
As the author of an article, you hold the copyright to it (unless you have assigned it to someone, e.g. a publisher). This journal lets you retain the copyright, but of course you must grant us a (nonexclusive) right to publish it. The right to publish is for any media, although at present the journal will only be publishing online. (If there are multiple authors, they all must consent.)

By publishing here you also agree that your article can be copied by anyone for noncommercial purposes if proper credit is given. The point of this is so that the journal is able to give the readers a simple statement about their rights and duties with respect to the copying of any article published in the journal.

Overview of Article Submission
After you have prepared an article (see Preparation Guide), this is how you will go about submitting it to the journal:
  • You go to the Registration page and register, if you haven't already, with your name and email address, and choose a user name and password.
  • You login and then go to your Author page where you can start and track submissions.
  • Starting a new submission, you will proceed through a few pages, entering basic data about your article. One thing to enter will be an abstract, which should be a paragraph-sized description of the subject of your article; this is important since it is the main thing indexed and is what people see before deciding to download your article.
  • You will be asked to identify the article file you have prepared on your computer and then to upload it. You will also be able to upload an optional supplementary file such as a GEDCOM (see Preparation Guide).
  • You can interrupt the submission process and return at any time to continue the submission at the page you left off.
  • After the submission is complete, an editor will review it and get back to you by email. There may be revisions suggested; if so you can upload a revised version of your article file or supplementary file.
  • If the article is accepted for publication and after it is in final form, it may appear in the current issue on the web site or in the following issue.
Privacy Statement
The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.
